America’s Threat From Within
Among the many dangers America faces throughout the world, none may be more imminent than what our current unhinged president might unleash, including the possibility of a cornered Trump declaring a national emergency, seen inside presidential-emergency-powers. If we’re dealing with a true psychopath (as we just might be), we can’t put anything past this guy & what he might be capable of doing. Within this cult that is the party of Trump, there’s a bizarre psychosis being played out, both among the leader & his doting followers. A poll conducted over the summer found that many Trump supporters trust the President more than their own friends and family. Raw Story spoke with Yale psychiatry professor Bandy X. Lee on why the president’s supporters show such undying devotion to a man who’s repeatedly reneged on promises and whose tumultuous first term has been filled with shake-ups. (Lee speaks for herself, not for Yale).
Bandy X. Lee: The sense of grandiose omnipotence that he displays seems especially appealing to his emotionally-needy followers. No matter what the world says, he fights back against criticism, continues to lie in the face of truth, and above all is still president. What matters is that he is winning, not whether he is honest or law-abiding. This may seem puzzling to the rest of us, but when you are overcome with feelings of powerlessness, this type of cartoonish, exaggerated force is often more important than true ability. This is the more primitive morality, as we call it, of “might makes right,” which in normal development you grow out of by age five. Strongman-type personalities are very appealing in times of socioeconomic or political crisis, as the population is less able to think rationally but is rather overcome with fear, or desire to draw strength from fantastical ideas. This happens to normal people in times of stress, or to people whose development has been stunted because of emotional injury. The problem is, the person who promises the impossible and states, “I alone can fix it,” and gives himself an A+ on his performance, is not a strong person who can deliver but the opposite. So Mr. Trump’s “base“ looks for someone to rescue them and their intense yearning does not allow them to see through his deception, while Mr. Trump senses better than anyone their needs (they are his) and makes use of them for his own benefit—even as he disdains his supporters for being so gullible. In this manner, they fulfill each other’s emotional needs in a mutually unhealthy way.
It is actually a tragedy that Mr. Trump cannot receive proper care, even as his disorder is on display for the world to see, but is rather surrounded by those who enable his illness and make use of his weaknesses to their own destructive ends. We were worried that he might lead us into a devastating war or stage a terrorist attack, but he actually managed to turn a humanitarian crisis of people fleeing violence into an invading army that required thousands of troops at the Mexican border. If this “feigned war” fails to distract, then he may yet stage a real war. With the special counsel’s investigations about to be released, after devastating midterm elections for him and in a vulnerable economy, he will experience loss of popularity as a terrifying threat to his inflated self-image. There will likely be no limit to the violence he is capable of, since destroying the world would be nothing compared to the shame and humiliation he might suffer.
More Risks emanating from Attacks on Media
Also dangerous to journalists & democracy itself is the way Trump calls the media the enemy of the people. We’re seeing the repercussions in our nation from his reckless language in reports like jake-tapper-rips-trumps-dangerous-anti-press-rhetoric-in-mag-interview-hes-waging-war-on-accountability & also cnn-york-offices-evacuated & also cnn-bomb-threat-trump-tweets-fake-news, which can only get worse as the prez keeps stirring up anger among his base towards the media.
It not only undermines our American democracy, but fuels fascist dictators around the world to usurp power by controlling the messaging, even to the point of punishing or murdering journalists. Trump’s rhetoric helps enable such evil, while he’s now even gone so far as to practically vindicate the Saudi prince responsible for the brutal murder of a WaPo journalist, & who had also become a permanent American resident about to get married: trump-khashoggi-killing-lies.
So while our own president attacks the American values we cherish, he has also unleashed upon the world this perilous assault on the free press, threatening to repress the free flow of information & valued freedoms everywhere. My Old Party has been Hijacked by Corrupt Forces, including the Evil Echo
The party of Trump is one I had to flee! This takeover of the GOP by the Trump cult is so widespread & complete, that deranged mindset which is so radical leaves little space for the rational: weekly-standard-may-be-teetering-its-anti-trumpism-is-model-standing-firm-principle. And that right-wing messaging/media echo which has grown into a monster is now so uniformly extreme way out on the far-right, there’s no longer much of an audience for pragmatic conservatism: weekly-standard-never-trump-magazine-closure. I post articles from many of the most well-known media outlets that conservatives complain are liberal publications, because in these times it’s gotten very difficult to find any objective conservative sources anymore.
Those of us who are firmly never-Trumpers & cannot support the current version of the GOP, unmistakably the party of Trump for now, we must hold true to our values & remain patient. The party under the weight of the Trump cult should someday fall from the obvious deception, corruption & inhumanity. In the interim we can support Dems or independents, waiting for the day our former party returns to integrity, principles & sanity. Fox Rampant Deception

Watching the Hannity show by itself almost has the same effect of running one’s brain through a meat grinder, but the brain damage actually becomes worse when also watching the Fox show before it: stelter-someone-should-inform-tucker-carlson-about-mueller-probe-so-he-doesnt-embarrass-himself-again. And such self-imposed mind destruction becomes complete by also watching the show afterwards: laura-ingraham-confederate-statues-isis. Voter Fraud
It’s bad enough the corrupted party of Trump would make claims of millions of illegal votes & widespread voter fraud with no evidence. And it’s also bad enough to close polling stations in mostly urban/minority districts where traveling longer distances & waiting in line for hours discourage voting. It’s also inexcusable for our prez to practically invite interference by bad foreign actors like Russia when he doesn’t prioritize safeguards for preventing their attacks on our election campaigns (& we may find out soon if the Trump campaign in 2016 actively coordinated with the Russians).
From the 2018 elections, we now see an orchestrated effort from the NC GOP to stuff the ballot box with illegal absentee ballots voting GOP & tossing many ballots coming from Dem areas, which should force a revote: bladen-county-election-fraud-and-north-carolina-voter-id & also in-north-carolina-republicans-fight-imaginary-voter-fraud-while-ignoring-the-real-thing. In addition, we also see some of the same dirty tricks done in NC years ago now performed in WI & MI, where they deliberately hamstring the powers of the incoming Dem administrations, as seen in this whole article posted below from republican-democracy-stress-test-michigan-wisconsin-north-carolina. Following their president’s lead, the GOP party of Trump is embarked on a relentless effort to delegitimize elections & undermine the democratic process, plus we’re seeing the real voter fraud is coming from the right:
In 2012, North Carolina Republicans won a “trifecta” of legislative and executive power. They used their newfound power to aggressively gerrymander the electoral map and impose new restrictions on voting. In 2016, Democrats reversed those gains, narrowly toppling incumbent Gov. Pat McCrory—and the GOP Legislature responded by stripping the incoming executive of key powers and privileges. Before Democrats took their seats, Republicans ended the governor’s control of election boards, withdrew the office’s ability to make appointments to the state school board and the University of North Carolina’s Board of Trustees, slashed the overall number of jobs appointed by the governor from 1,500 to 300, and made Cabinet nominations subject to state Senate approval. Rather than accept the will of the voters, who empowered the new governor to take the reins of the state government, Republicans entrenched their influence and undermined gubernatorial authority in an effort to avoid and undermine democratic accountability.
At the time, this anti-democratic maneuvering appeared exceptional to North Carolina. But in the wake of major Democratic victories in the 2018 midterm elections, it seems it was the canary in the coal mine. Democrats won important victories in Republican-controlled Midwestern states that backed Donald Trump for president, in many instances, flipping the control of state legislatures. Democrats in Michigan won close races for governor, attorney general, and secretary of state while Democrats in Wisconsin won races for governor—sweeping incumbent Scott Walker out of office—and attorney general. Instead of allowing power to shift without contest, Republicans in both states are now fighting rear-guard actions to strip authority from these offices, using “lame duck” sessions to launch what are effectively legislative coup d’états. In Wisconsin, GOP lawmakers have advanced bills to sharply limit the power of the incoming governor, Tony Evers. The measures will restrict his ability to run public benefits programs and curb his authority to set rules on the implementation of state laws. They’ve also placed a legislative veto on any effort to ban guns from the state capitol and ended gubernatorial control over the Walker-created agency that uses taxpayer-funded loans and subsidies to attract outside businesses.
Republicans have also planned an attack on the attorney general’s office. They’ve eliminated the (recently created) office of the solicitor general, established a new legislative power to intervene in any litigation challenging a state law (even allowing lawmakers to hire their own lawyers, at taxpayer expense, to undermine the attorney general), given legislators control over money from court settlements, and given the legislature’s budget committee, rather than the attorney general, the right to decide on continued legal action against the Affordable Care Act. The scope of these changes is a sign of the state GOP’s confidence in its ability to hold the Legislature—confidence that stems from the party’s extreme partisan gerrymandering that has created a firewall such that Republicans can resist anything short of a tsunami of opposition. To that end, Wisconsin Republicans also want new limits on early voting. It’s an almost identical situation in Michigan, where Democrats have captured all three statewide offices—governor, attorney general, and secretary of state—for the first time in 28 years. There, Republican lawmakers have introduced several lame-duck proposals for wresting power from incoming Democratic officeholders. First is a bill that would allow the legislature to intervene in any legal proceedings involving state laws that the governor and attorney general may be reluctant to defend. A separate proposal would shift oversight of campaign finance law from the secretary of state to a six-person commission with members nominated by the state Republican and Democratic parties, a move that would produce deadlock in handling those issues, likely entrenching a status quo shaped by Republican officials. Even the best defense of these moves—that they are simply an effort to protect the gains and accomplishments of the previous majority—accepts the anti-democratic reasoning that an outgoing majority is not bound by the results of an election, and instead has the right to change the rules of the game to preserve its power.
The peaceful uncontested transfer of power is the cornerstone of representative democracy—the critical moment where we see if political actors have embraced the spirit of cooperation and adherence to the rules that make self-government possible. There are laws for how we accomplish the orderly transfer of power, but the moment itself, the choice of a party or politician to honor to the will of the voters, is an act of democratic faith—a statement of belief in the American idea. It’s why Donald Trump earned wide condemnation when he hinted, during the 2016 election, that he would not concede the election in the event of a loss to Hillary Clinton. To reject the outcome of a fair election is to directly undermine the entire democratic project. Republicans in Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina haven’t gone as far as to challenge the results of their respective elections, but their actions, which serve to hamstring the incoming body of duly elected officials, are movement in that direction. In national politics, Republican lawmakers are openly questioning the legitimacy of the Democratic House of Representatives victory, casting ordinary acts—the counting of ballots—as potentially insidious. Indeed, much of the Republican Party has already embraced voter suppression, extreme gerrymandering, and other methods to preserve legislative majorities in the face of popular opposition. The lame-duck power grab is just a natural next step. For all the attention on Donald Trump as a threat to American democracy, it’s these actions—from ordinary, almost anonymous, Republican politicians, uncontested by anyone of influence in the party—that are much more ominous. It’s one thing to jockey for partisan advantage, it’s something much more dangerous to treat democracy like a game of Calvinball, where the rules only count when they suit your interests.
