Yes, We Need to Impeach, but let’s just Bide Our Time…While Russia has been using Trump as kompromat, the president’s nationalistic/isolationist positions are making the world a far more dangerous place. On the point of kompromat which is a Russian term for being compromised, the Kremlin saw Trump as an easy target. As an old KGB agent, Putin has always been bitter over the way Reagan & Bush 41 befriended Gorbachev, leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall & breakup of the Soviet Union. So in (likely) coordination with the Trump campaign to interfere in the U.S. presidential election & sow discord in fueling our partisan divides, Putin is exacting his revenge. And with our own prez involved in crimes where we do need to impeach, let’s wait for the concrete proof so we can make it count!
So admittedly, it’s important for us to be patient & let Mueller fill in the blanks. Impeachment is both legal & political. As a much more solid case is built, it will then become easier to do the right thing while hopefully not tearing the country apart. And it’s going to take the full arsenal to flip at least 20 GOP senators for booting out the prez. The campaign finance violations over hush money to mistresses don’t seem to rise to the level of swaying Republicans.
Two decades ago President Clinton was impeached but got acquitted in the Senate, since his case degenerated down into a perception it was just a sex scandal. And John Edwards was acquitted by a jury nearly a decade ago for a similar campaign finance/sex scandal as Trump’s, although it did end his political career. Both the Dem & GOP base should want the facts to come out first in making the correct decision. So let’s be patient, since I’m confident we can rest assured the crimes revealed from last week’s court memos are only a fraction of what’s coming: democrats-shouldnt-try-impeach-trump. And when that time comes, yes, we need to impeach with the expectation of a successful conclusion.
It does appear Trump became a Kremlin puppet, long enamored with Putin & seeking to strike real estate deals with Russia, including a Trump Tower in Moscow. So as the puzzle pieces from the investigations are put together, a picture emerges of a quid pro quo deal between the Trump campaign & Russia. Trump could get his tower & big assistance with his campaign, as the Russians smeared his opponent by leaking hacked emails & mounted a social media disinformation campaign. In exchange, Trump would back the lifting of choking sanctions while repealing the Magnitsky Act, plus probably turn the other way were Russia to invade Ukraine. This attack on our election & democracy was great for both sides, as long as they weren’t caught. Well, they’re getting caught! And then we’ll indeed need to impeach.
As for more thoughts on the risky Trumpian international doctrine, he’s put huge strains on NATO, threatens to pull out of the INF nuclear arms control treaty with Russia, did back out of the Iran deal which restricted their nuclear program, has been strung along by the North Korean dictator who appears to have no intention of curtailing his nuclear weapons, cut aid to Pakistan which is a nation with nukes & sizable radical Islamic population, & has started a trade war with China. Other than that, there’s not much to worry about. Just think about what we’re watching going on. We have an American President who berates allies, coddles dictators, & could spark a nuclear arms race where the world becomes cursed with unfettered nuclear proliferation. I’m no lawyer, so I’ll leave it to others to analyze the legal trouble that President Donald Trump and his associates appear to be in, based on what prosecutors have revealed recently. But as far as the politics go, I can say that the case for impeachment and removal has become quite a bit stronger than it was a month ago, and at least somewhat more likely to happen. There are still plenty of unknowns, of course. But it’s more likely. It’s true that special counsel Robert Mueller hasn’t yet accused Trump of wrongdoing in the Russia scandal. Nor is it clear, according to the experts, that Trump broke the law in directing his former lawyer Michael Cohen to pay hush money to women so they wouldn’t accuse him of affairs during the 2016 campaign. It turns out that directing Cohen to commit felonies — which prosecutors say Trump did, and almost surely have the evidence to prove — may not mean that Trump himself committed a crime.
So why is impeachment more likely? Because the hush-money episode is ugly on its face, whether or not Trump broke the law. Because there’s more and more evidence of improper behavior by Trump and his campaign with regard to Russia. And because it’s now more obvious than ever that Trump has been lying about both. Remember: Impeachment is a political process, not a criminal one. If Congress thinks that what Trump and his associates did constitutes “high crimes and misdemeanors,” then it doesn’t matter if they technically violated the criminal code. And that’s why I think the recent revelations are such a big deal. It’s now obvious that Trump had a strong motive for concealing the truth about his conduct, both with regard to Russia and to his affairs. That matters. Although the public evidence that Trump obstructed justice has always seemed pretty strong, it wasn’t clear until recently that he was covering up anything significant. Until last week, Republicans could still plausibly argue that impeaching a president for attempting to derail an investigation he had no reason to fear would be ridiculous. Now that argument wouldn’t pass the giggle test. Now, unless Mueller winds up undermining what appears to be a pretty strong obstruction case, it’s going to be a lot harder for Democrats to ignore the evidence and for Republicans to deny it.

We are on the eve of the conclusion of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation and the House’s commencement of investigations of the president and his administration. The likely convergence of these two events will occur at a time when simmering regional conflicts and global power confrontations continue to threaten our security, economy and geopolitical stability. It is a time, like other critical junctures in our history, when our nation must engage at every level with strategic precision and the hand of both the president and the Senate.
We are at an inflection point in which the foundational principles of our democracy and our national security interests are at stake, and the rule of law and the ability of our institutions to function freely and independently must be upheld. During our service in the Senate, at times we were allies and at other times opponents, but never enemies. We all took an oath swearing allegiance to the Constitution. Whatever united or divided us, we did not veer from our unwavering and shared commitment to placing our country, democracy and national interest above all else. At other critical moments in our history, when constitutional crises have threatened our foundations, it has been the Senate that has stood in defense of our democracy. Trump & Rudy’s rebuttal to the coming Mueller report plans to lean heavily on the same old stale red-meat talking points constantly heard on Fox fake news & the echo. They don’t have much of a legal case, so they’re making it a political case with the same garbage their base routinely swallows, as seen in excerpts patched together from rudy-giuliani-mueller-report:
Donald Trump’s legal team has prepared a response to Robert Mueller’s probe that features the president’s favorite conspiracy-theory villains, from Peter Strzok and his lover to those who financed a dossier that Trump falsely claims sparked the investigation against him. Strzok, Lisa Page, Bruce and Nellie Ohr, Christopher Steele and Hillary Clinton’s campaign lawyers will all be covered in the report, which Trump boasted was “already 87 pages” in a tweet Friday morning. When asked Friday whether the report would attack the various players involved in the investigation, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani told HuffPost: “You’re damned right we are. I can’t imagine how we wouldn’t.” Trump and his allies repeatedly claim, falsely, that the unverified intelligence tidbits contained in Steele’s report were the basis of the FBI investigation into Trump. But that probe began in the summer of 2016 based on tips from Western European intelligence agencies reporting that Russian operatives appeared to be in contact with Trump’s presidential campaign. Trump and Giuliani’s approach, which tries to discredit the people and the process behind the investigation rather than its findings, has been fodder for the Fox News shows that Trump watches religiously and for House intelligence committee Republicans since the investigation became public a year and a half ago.
Giuliani defended that tactic, saying that the facts of how the investigation proceeded were a legitimate target of criticism because they became the basis for what he called an inappropriate surveillance warrant on a Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page. “I could write a whole book,” he said. Trump and his team have repeatedly and falsely claimed that the Page warrant was based primarily on the Steele dossier and that it became the foundation on which the Russia probe was built. Trump openly praised Russia’s authoritarian ruler throughout his campaign, while Vladimir Putin’s spy agencies actively worked to elect Trump by stealing emails from Democrats and releasing them through an ally, WikiLeaks. Trump repeatedly praised WikiLeaks and pointed to the stolen emails as proof that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was corrupt. After Trump fired Comey in May 2017, he told Russian diplomats visiting the Oval Office and then NBC News that he had done so because of the Russia investigation. Mueller, who had served as FBI director under presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, was appointed special counsel to continue the probe after Comey’s firing. Whether Mueller winds up filing a final report with the Department of Justice or just spells out his findings in various court filings remains unclear. Thus far, he has included far more details about his findings in indictments and sentencing memoranda than have been legally necessary.

President Trump tweeted: “FAKE NEWS – The enemy of the people!” A few minutes later, a bomb threat was called into the CNN headquarters in New York City, and the whole building, along with adjacent buildings, had to be evacuated. Coincidence? We many never know for sure, but what is unmistakable is that when you have a commander in chief who so openly insults journalists on a daily basis, it helps create a cauldron of hate and resentment that may drive someone to do something unthinkable. How long until we can draw a vivid line from Trump’s hateful words to someone’s deadly deeds? You could argue that the line can already be drawn. In October, we witnessed the deadliest synagogue shooting in the history of the United States. Hate crimes have shot up significantly since Trump took office. Trump declared himself a nationalist, which for many is code language for someone who ascribes to the tenets of white supremacy.
The “bomber” who in October sent more than 16 bombs to CNN, Democratic leaders, ex-presidents, etc., had been seen at Trump rallies chanting “CNN sucks.” And who can forget the murder perpetrated in Charlottesville last year as neo-Nazis marched, spewing their xenophobia, racism and bigotry, while the president of the United States declared there were “very fine people on both sides?” Most recently, the killing of Washington Post writer Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi was arguably made more palatable to Trump’s ally Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman because of Trump’s repeated attacks on the press as the “Enemy of the People”
Journalists and media professionals strive on a daily basis to objectively bring Americans the truth, report the facts and back all of it up with empirical evidence. Around the world, journalists put their lives on the line every day in war-torn countries to shed light on the plight of refugees and the unspeakable brutality of dictators and warlords. A free media is a cornerstone of a free society. You cannot have one without the other. The president of the United States should, under any circumstance, vociferously defend a free media, no matter how much he or she may disagree with or dislike the manner in which they are being covered or the stories that are being reported.
But that is not the case when the president rails on CNN, The New York Times or The Washington Post and screams they are fake news and the enemy of the people. He does this not because the stories are factually inaccurate but because he hates that the stories are being reported at all. The only way he knows how to respond, since facts and truth are never on his side, is with insults and false accusations that have become dangerous and foreboding. It is Trump’s language that has become a danger to the country and many who live here. How is a president who insults his own former cabinet secretaries, has insulted people of color in America, insults and belittles his political foes, insults decorated military heroes and paints immigrants as criminals and gang members not considered a menace to the republic? When you occupy the highest office in the land and are considered the leader of the free world, your words matter. They have an effect on people. If your words are uplifting and unifying, then you are doing your job. If your words are divisive and hateful, then who is the real enemy of the people?
Fox Lies & Corrupt Culture have grown Progressively Worse
The corrupt world of Fox fake news continues to carry on the tradition started by Roger Ailes. I would argue in their earlier years, Fox was a much-needed conservative counter to the mainstream media. But the radicalized far-right influence of talk radio, social media, the tea party & this new era of Trump, the Fox rhetoric succumbed to the delusional mindset conservative audiences have been conditioned to believe. So the Fox News that is broadcast today, especially the evening shows, are far more nonsensical, dishonest & deranged than a decade or two ago. Ailes poured gasoline on a fire because the more folks were outraged, the more they watched. Bloom’s shrewd film unpacks the Fox News model of “riling up the crazies.” He got emotional reactions from people, especially those in the heartland, by keeping the story out of the “critical (read: liberal) press.” But “Divide and Conquer” also shows some personal aspects to Ailes. His despicable treatment of women is also examined. Ailes often picked on the vulnerable and manipulated things, putting one career women on a “no hire list” after she refused to sleep with him, or harassing a possible hire by asking her to twirl for him in their interview. Bloom shows how Ailes commanded (and rewarded) fierce loyalty. He protected Bill O’Reilly when he was faced with a harassment suit, and hired Bo Deitl, a private investigator as a bombastic talking head to support claims and do damage control. Trump was “Fox-y,” too. One interviewee says that, “If Trump didn’t exist, Roger Ailes would have created him.”
How much of it is Murdoch’s fault? Murdoch bankrolled him and looked the other way. Roger picked his legal counsel and head of HR; it was his fiefdom. In that sense Rupert Murdoch was culpable. As long as Roger was making money, Murdoch didn’t care. He was breaking the rules and acting the way a CEO and functioning head of a corporation shouldn’t act. We know he knew Rupert Murdoch had to sign off on lawsuits — and he did. So, he’s totally responsible for Ailes in some way through his neglect and avarice. Rupert Murdoch’s ideology dovetails with Ailes’ in some regard. They are both right of center, and Rupert Murdoch could shift allegiances when it suited him — e.g., about Blair and Obama. There’s no Roger Ailes without Rupert Murdoch. Roger’s skill set made it happen. Rupert Murdoch left running of company to Roger.
Why Waste Time with Tucker?
The Tucker Carlson show (or is it Carlson Tucker? Or does it even matter?) is simply boring & largely irrelevant, as the bigoted/racist host often goes off on wild tangents with contrived stories scaring his viewers with cultural topics, which is usually much ado about nothing. The immigration-obsessed Carlson regularly overdramatizes & rants against the horrors of illegals or DACA or Dreamers or whomever. So when an undocumented illegal immigrant report hit the headlines last week, a group Tucker loves to demonize, you’d think he’d be all over it. But with these offenses occurring on Trump property, the story was totally ignored. To me, anyone who watches Carlson every night is practically putting themselves into a self-induced coma.
The Next Show on Fox is Far More Destructive!
There are a number of famous bumbling comedy duos throughout history, including Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, Rowan & Martin, the Smothers Brothers, Blues Brothers or Cheech & Chong. But the current comedy duo aren’t even trying to be funny, & when they’re running our country it’s no laughing matter. From watching the foolhardy Hannity show every night & regularly talking on the phone with him, our American President is making decisions & channeling rhetoric based on whatever his Fox buddy tells him. That has become rather apparent as we can see in excerpts pulled from trump-hannity-fox-news-talking-points. It is extremely dangerous when such a radical tag team governs our nation based on delusional opinions not grounded in reality:
President Donald Trump, often accused of waging a war against the press, mostly spares Fox News of his attacks. Not for no reason, it seems, many have observed over the years that Trump and Fox News operate in coordination. For instance, a January Politico report has found that Trump and his favorite news channel appear to be willingly stuck in somewhat of a “feedback loop.” Politico studied Trump’s Twitter feed for three months, concluding that the president often live-tweets the network’s coverage, therefore dictating the news cycle and effectively forcing other news outlets to report on Fox Newstalking points. Instead of relying on “the world’s most powerful information-gathering machine,” the United States intelligence community, Trump prefers to gain understanding about domestic and world events via his favorite cable news shows. Similarly, Daniel W. Drezner, a professor of international politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, observed in an op-ed penned for the Washington Post that there appears to exist something called “the Fox News effect.” Meaning, it has become clear even to the most casual of observers that Fox News plays a significant role in the president’s information diet. Trump, Drezner wrote, often appears to parrot Fox Newstalking points, regardless of how accurate the conservative network’s claims are.
Perhaps further proving that there exists a Trump-Fox feedback loop is a new video created and released by nonprofit media watchdog group Media Matters. The video shows President Donald Trump directly repeating Fox News host — “chief propagandist,” is how the organization put it — Sean Hannity’s talking points. “It is becoming increasingly clear that the president is receiving inspiration for his daily rage tweets about the special counsel’s ongoing investigation from Hannity’s programming,” the group wrote. The video shows Sean Hannity smearing Special Counsel Robert Mueller, making seemingly unsubstantiated claims about his probe into Russian election interference and possible coordination with the Trump campaign, discussing Trump critics and opponents, while propping up the president. Sean Hannity’s talking points, the video shows, are tweeted — often verbatim — by Donald Trump. “The president is lashing out on Twitter, oftentimes employing language that can be traced back, nearly verbatim” to Sean Hannity, Media Matters concluded. Given Trump’s love for Fox News, this hardly comes as a surprise, but it has been reported that the president has a special bond with Hannity. According to Newsweek, Sean Hannity has Donald Trump’s direct phone line, and the two men often talk multiple times during the day. During a typical late-night phone call, the president and the host reportedly discuss Mueller’s Russia probe and exchange information, seemingly coordinating with each other.
Where do they find these Nutwings?
Fox deliberately puts people on the air based on their unique abilities to be knuckleheads. The number is almost too many to count. Here we see yet another example, as Hemingway has a track record in her smug way of being about as loony as Hannity, Dobbs or Judge Jeanine: mediabuzz-panel-heats-up-as-hemingway-and-fowler-clash-over-russia-probe-take-it-outside. As crazy as it might seem, Fox fake news may control the GOP even more than Trump does: americas-next-howard-baker-is-more-likely-to-come-from-fox-news-than-the-nations-capital.
Narrative from Outer Space
Fox & the echo are always creating their own version of the Mueller probe that exists in an alternate galaxy light-years away from our reality here on Earth. Especially on Russia, they no longer report on anything loosely connected to facts, dredging up any lie they think will play to their base, because protecting a criminal president is far more important to them than reporting the truth. That is brought out in excerpts below from major-lies-and-mistakes-trumps-defenders-repeat-about-the-mueller-investigation-debunked. Even beyond what is explained in those 3 categories, the echo produces a constant stream of false conspiracies that are so preposterous, it’s hard to believe we’d even need to refute them. But somehow among the conservative flock, many believe in the unbelievable. That’s the kind of destructive brainwashing effect living inside the echo-bubble can have:
As Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation accelerates, President Donald Trump’s defenders continue to spin their wheels in a desperate attempt to undermine the investigation’s conclusions before it’s even completed. Fortunately, the Mueller probe critics are not particularly inventive, and they repeat the same talking points and make the same mistakes repeatedly, so they’re easy to debunk. Here are three of the biggest assumptions the Trump’s defenders make about the investigations, and why they’re misguided:
- Mueller is biased against Trump
It’s become an article of faith among many pro-Trump Republicans that the special counsel is irredeemably biased against Trump. They cling to this belief despite the fact that he was picked by a Trump appointee, and the choice was widely praised by Democrats and Republicans. Tuesday night on Fox Business, for example, host Lou Dobbs literally said Mueller is “trying to kill” Trump. But there’s just no basis for this claim, which is even more transparently desperate because it’s been made before Mueller has ever made any allegations against Trump. This isn’t how defenders of the innocent act. Before former FBI Director James Comey revealed the results of his investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails, her allies weren’t calling him biased against her — they were predicting that he would exonerate her because they didn’t believe she had done anything illegal. Comey’s actions later proved much more complicated and opened him up to criticism, but that criticism was based on his actions, not the mere fact that that he was investigating her. The Trumpian assumption that Mueller is biased seems to assume that Mueller will accuse Trump of wrongdoing, which isn’t what you should assume if you think he’s innocent. Of all the claims made in this vein is the idea that Mueller is somehow looking for revenge against Trump because of a dispute over golf club fees. This frivolous claim is barely worth discussing, but if it intrigues you, Slate had it pretty well covered.
- Process crimes don’t matter
Trump defenders have made a lot out of the fact that many of the charges in the Mueller probe thus far relate to false statements to the FBI or Congress. After Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about a Trump Tower Moscow deal, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) dismissed it as a “process crime.” Now, there are good reasons to be skeptical of prosecutors who grope to find charges for subjects of an investigation that they can’t prove committed any other crimes. This tool can certainly be abused. But there’s no reason to think Mueller is abusing it. Trump’s allies, including Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, George Papadopoulos, and Michael Cohen have all reportedly lied to investigators about an investigation central to the country’s national security. Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions misled the Senate about the same topic. This abundance of lies is bad in itself — it can stymie an important investigation — and it is also evidence that other crimes are being covered up. By making clear that he is willing to charge people with lying, Mueller improves his chances of getting honest answers out of other witnesses from his investigation. And, as many have argued, he may be using the lying charges strategically to apply pressure on targets of the investigation without revealing his hand, which could be a wise course of action. And finally, Republicans should recognize that, even if all those who have lied to Mueller and Congress are innocent of any other crimes, it would still be bad that they lied. This investigation is important to the American people, and it’s important that witnesses tell the truth in it, even if it’s embarrassing or inconvenient to do so. The fact that people have lied means, at the very least, that they undermined the integrity of an investigation of major significance — and that fact should be taken very seriously.
- They assume Trump is innocent of everything
Alan Dershowitz, writing for the Wall Street Journal wrote: “I don’t believe that the Mueller report will directly accuse President Trump of any crimes. Collusion—even if Mr. Mueller were to conclude that it occurred—is not a crime.” Collusion, of course, could be a crime, if it involves colluding to do something illegal. New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood has already launched a lawsuit alleging serious civil violations by Trump. He has already been implicated in a federal crime by Michael Cohen. This apparent assumption that Trump is innocent, which implicitly lies behind much of the fuming at Mueller, is somewhat belied by the first mistake outline above. While Trump’s defenders seem to insist that he couldn’t and wouldn’t have done anything wrong, they also clearly fear that Mueller, who was initially praised by the Newt Gingrich is “impeccable for honesty and integrity,” will find something on him. It is clear that, even as their arguments assume Trump is innocent, many of the president’s defenders don’t actually believe it. That’s why they don’t believe Mueller should still be investigating, or should be allowed to probe his businesses, or pursue “process crimes.” They believe, as any reasonable observer should, that Trump is probably guilty of some serious crimes. They just don’t care.
