Part 1

We skipped posting our message on Easter Sunday in recognition of the day we honor the resurrection of Jesus.  But once again we have a ton of news to report on.  So here is our Monday night post as we’re keeping Part 1 reserved for when more news of the president’s crimes hit the news.  Without any articles to post here we’ll skip on down to Part 2, but we always include these Part 1 sections even with nothing new to reveal, since they help serve as reminders there’s been lots of solid evidence of multiple crimes posted here in the past & will soon be again.  Yes, I’m supremely confident further criminal activities by Trump will be unveiled, since that’s just who he is & has often been shown to be.  And as has been the case lately with the Coronavirus pandemic & its effects on our health, economy, psyche & way of life, most of the news lands in Part 3 below with plenty of details on the deadly delay.

In the course of three days, Trump fired an IG for telling the truth, attacked another for exposing the totality of a health care pandemic, and removed another in a brazen effort to avoid being held accountable for how trillions of taxpayer dollars will be allocated. The sum of these actions is nothing short of blatant corruption in plain sight. Free from the limitations of accountability, there is nothing stopping the president from turning the so-called “Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act” (CARES Act) into a $2 trillion personal slush fund. Trump feels empowered to obliterate the guardrails of checks and balances. Bit by bit, he has stripped away the levers of oversight until there’s nothing left. It started by ignoring congressional subpoenas for his financial records. It continued as Trump refused to cooperate with the House impeachment investigation, stonewalling Congress’ attempts to hear witness testimony and conduct depositions with administration officials close to the president. And now he is leading a purge of the final remaining frontier of oversight — the inspectors general.

 For anyone hoping the Supreme Court will assert its role as the third branch of government, it has delayed hearing cases, including three lawsuits involving Trump’s tax returns and financial dealings. And yet, somehow, the Supreme Court managed to reverse a federal judge’s order to extend absentee voting by a week in Wisconsin’s primary on Tuesday. The result was that voters had to choose between their health and their civic duty. The court’s refusal to move forward with cases that impact the president, coupled with its willingness to interfere with the Wisconsin election, foreshadows a very dangerous path as we look ahead to the November elections. In essence, the court’s conservative majority is just another political instrument for Trump to wield.

 It may be hard to see the forest through the trees in this time of social distancing, but make no mistake about it, our democracy is in the midst of a three-alarm fire. The highest court in the land has effectively been hijacked — serving only the interests of Donald Trump. Congress is no longer a co-equal branch of government, a result of Trump’s toxic brand of obstruction. By taking a wrecking ball to independent oversight, Trump has made the presidency into a dictatorship. At this point, the only recourse we will have left to save our democracy, repair the institutions of government, and restore accountability to the American people, is to vote in November to save “the soul of this nation.” That is, assuming Trump, the Republicans and the Supreme Court let us.

Litigation usually involves sworn affidavits attesting to accuracy and testimony given under oath if a trial occurs, so Mr. Zirin is able to reference page after page of irrefutable evidence of Trump’s legal maneuvering, misstatements, hyperbole, and outright lies. As Mr. Zirin points out, Trump learned how to use the law from his mentor, the notoriously unprincipled lawyer and fixer Roy Cohn whose motto was “Fuck the law.” Trump took Cohn’s scorched earth strategy to heart and used the law to attack others, to never accept blame or responsibility, and to always claim victory no matter how badly he lost. “Trump saw litigation as being only about winning,” Mr. Zirin writes. “He sued at the drop of a hat. He sued for sport; he sued to achieve control; and he sued to make a point. He sued as a means of destroying or silencing those who crossed him. He became a plaintiff in chief.”

And Trump also has been a defendant in hundreds of legal actions, as Mr. Zirin details. In 2016, there were 160 federal lawsuits pending in which he was a named defendant, as well as numerous other investigations and proceeding. Mr. Zirin observes that Trump “has been sued for race and sex discrimination, sexual harassment, fraud, breach of trust, money laundering, defamation, stiffing his creditors, defaulting on loans, and . . . he [has] been investigated for deep ties to the Mob, which he enjoyed over the years.” And Trump’s pattern of disrespect and contempt for the law persists. As Mr. Zirin writes, “All this aberrant behavior would be problematic in a businessman. . . But the implications of such conduct in a man who is the president of the United States are nothing less than terrifying.”

The Evil Fox just Isn’t the Same

As a long-time Fox News viewer, I can attest to not long ago this sly Fox was actually a relatively sane conservative voice, helping balance the often left-leaning slants from the mainstream media.  But a few years ago, their narrative changed to align with the more extremist far-right viewpoints out there that were far more destructive/nihilistic/scorched-earth than the logical/constructive/pragmatic conservatism we need to recapture.  I gave up on Fox since I get insulted when I’m constantly being lied to.  The dramatic shift has been abundantly clear to me, but most Fox viewers are just blindly following along & allowing the network to shape their opinions & ideologies.  There remains the chicken or egg question, did the audience get their extremist views from the rest of the echo, when Fox committed to their constant stream of deranged mania messaging to please their viewers?  Or was it the Fox insane lunacy that caused their viewers to go off the rails into their personal derangement zone?  I suspect some of both were at play.  But the evil Fox is a crazy fox, so here are recent reports on that network’s twisted/toxic messaging in the time of Coronavirus:

Wayward Christians

A selfish attitude is the antithesis of showing Jesus’ love, compassion & grace.  So for those who refuse to heed the warnings by packing into crowded churches, they are being seen as bad neighbors.  They not only risk their own health, but threaten to spread the virus to the surrounding community, as these self-righteous heathens continue to destroy their own Christian witness while sending a signal to the world their faith has turned toxic.  We needn’t fret about empty churches on a temporary basis, since even from home & attending remote services we can still celebrate the empty tomb: https://www.theweek.com/articles/907879/empty-churches-empty-tomb.

Part 3

This is our economy section & there’s so much to tell.  With the system itself being shook to its core over the virus, it just might pave the way for remaking our economy to where most can again strive for the American Dream.  That’s reason enough to not vote GOP this year.  Even before this virus virtually shut down our economy, it just never made much sense to me that a society producing such unimaginable wealth, would have a disproportionate share of their working citizens so strapped with struggling mightily to pay their bills.  Workers for decades have steadily lost their voice & leverage, along with ongoing stagnant real wages, as the forces of oligarchical crony-capitalism exploited the system along with their laborers: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/04/scott-galloway-america-replaced-capitalism-with-cronyism.html.  And every step along the way, GOP politicians in particular have favored the big corporate interests & their wealthy donors, coming at the expense of the working middle class. 

Remember, I’m a lifelong GOP supporter until the echo dragged formerly sensible/pragmatic conservatives into a demented version of oligarchy madness immersed in a group mindset longing for a totalitarian nightmare, which has consumed the entire party as they were duped into the cult of Trump.  In short, the Republican Party doesn’t resemble & is not even close to being the same party I once got behind.  The differences are as stark as turning Mother Teresa into Attila the Hun.  Rather than being a force for good in America, the new GOP now stands for deceit, divisiveness, selfishness, nihilism, immorality, corruption, income inequality & tribal misconceptions that taken together could become more destructive than we could currently imagine.  Once this deceptive party of delusion can be defeated, only then do we have a chance to remake a sane conservative party rising out of the ashes.

But even if my former party had not transformed itself from rational to radical, the GOP’s policy positions have failed to keep up with dramatically changing circumstances, so on that basis alone they should be voted out.  People aren’t meant to live under the constant pressures of a dog-eat-dog existence, stressed out over making ends meet since their paychecks can hardly cover the bills.  There was once a time the American Dream was accessible to most, as most jobs could pay the bills & support a family, but that was prior to the system becoming slanted so the gains went almost entirely towards the top.  We need to swing the pendulum back more into equilibrium, but don’t expect that to ever happen with the GOP in charge, since the current GOP will vociferously fight against such needed changes.

A great divide separates affluent Americans, who fully enjoy the benefits of life in the wealthiest nation on earth, from the growing portion of the population whose lives lack stability or any real prospect of betterment. The hedge-fund billionaire Kenneth Griffin paid $238 million last year for a New York apartment overlooking Central Park. He plans to stay there when he happens to be in town. Meanwhile, 10.9 million American families barely can afford an apartment. They spend more than half of their incomes on rent, and so they scrimp on food and health care. And on any given night, half a million Americans are homeless.

For those at the bottom, moreover, the chances of rising are in decline. By the time they reached 30, more than 90 percent of Americans born in 1940 were earning more than their parents had earned at the same age. But among those born in 1980, only half were earning more than their parents by the age of 30. The erosion of the American dream is not a result of laziness or a talent drought. Rather, opportunity has slipped away. The economic ladder is harder to climb; real incomes have stagnated for decades even as the costs of housing, education and health care have increased. Many lower-income Americans are born into polluted, impoverished neighborhoods, with no decent jobs to be found.

“By 40, my parents owned a house, had a kid — me — and were both doing well in their careers,” said Melanie Martin-Leff, who works in marketing in Philadelphia. “I’m freelancing, renting, partnerless and childless.” The inequalities of wealth have become inequalities of health. A middle-aged American in the top fifth of the income distribution can expect to live about 13 years longer than a person of the same age in the bottom fifth — an advantage that has more than doubled since 1980. These changes have become harder to reverse because the distribution of political power also is increasingly unequal. Our system of democracy is under strain as those with wealth increasingly shape the course of policymaking, acting from self-interest and perhaps also because it has become harder to imagine life on the other side of the divide or to design policy in the common interest.

The wealthy are particularly successful in blocking changes they don’t like. The political scientists Martin Gilens of University of California, Los Angeles and Benjamin Page of Northwestern have calculated that between 1981 and 2002, policies supported by at least 80 percent of affluent voters passed into law about 45 percent of the time, while policies opposed by at least 80 percent of those voters passed into law just 18 percent of the time. Importantly, the views of poor and middle-class voters had little influence.

The Headline is the Virus (& Featuring Deadly Mistakes)

I found myself swearing at my TV this afternoon & I’m not one to swear.  Today’s presser was a shameless exercise in outlandish disinformation & deflection, leading the briefing on the pandemic emergency with a campaign propaganda video featuring cherry-picked quotes from various governors.  Not only was the prez lying through his teeth while having a meltdown throughout the presser, but he’s using his Chinese travel ban as an excuse to mask the horrible omissions he failed to do in those early months after he got repeated warnings.  Trump has no answers on why he blew it in the handling of this crisis, so his knee-jerk reaction (like a jerk) is to attack reporters asking the right questions.

Trump could bluff his way through marriages, sexual abuse allegations, bankruptcies … hell, he could even bluff his way into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But he couldn’t bluff the virus. He doesn’t owe the virus any money. He hasn’t left the virus sobbing in some Reno hotel suite with no one to turn to. He can’t divorce the virus and remarry another, younger, prettier virus. He can’t slather the virus with orange pancake makeup and spray it into submission with swoops of combover cotton candy and fool everyone into believing it wasn’t really there.  Trump bluffed his way through everything else in his entire life, but he has finally tested positive. He’s on life support. He didn’t catch the virus. The virus caught him.
