WikiLeaks+Cambridge=Trouble for Trump

In the featured articles below, I begin with Russia since that offers our best chance to remove the clear & present danger now residing in the White House. The big news from the past couple days reveals Trump’s digital team secretly reached out to Julian Assange, seeking to exploit the hacked Hillary emails for the election campaign. It just provides evidence of another direct link to Russia (which has ties to Assange) & the meddling in the campaign they engaged in, plus soliciting such emails can certainly be construed as a crime.  Trump has always stated he’s a big fan of WikiLeaks which Assange ran, so the connections are not surprising.  Also Mercer’s company Cambridge Analytica, brought in by Kushner as a data analyst, are up to their eyeballs in these shady dealings.  This just adds to the hordes of evidence on the Russian ties.  In the other links on Russia, not much has been leaking on what Mueller is learning, but it sure looks like Manafort is increasingly in hot water.  There are some links to stories on the cyber-threats which are getting more & more dangerous, so it’s astounding we’re not making it our top priority to fight back & put up the needed defenses.  Trump keeps ignoring those dangers, which he’s either ignorant (no surprise), or he’s ignoring since he doesn’t want to wade into waters where Russia has something on him very damaging to Trump.

There are a couple articles on Tom Steyer drumming up a campaign to impeach Trump, which I’ve seen his TV ads.  I’m not ready to sign on yet, better to impeach him after the investigations find concrete evidence of crimes, otherwise we’ll spark a civil war with Trumpeters.  Steyer rightly points out the threat of a mentally-unstable Trump presiding over our nuclear weapons, but if his sanity becomes so much in question that nukes could be unleashed, we’d need to rely on the staff who work with him like Pence & the generals, in doing the right thing if necessary by invoking the 25th Amendment.  Steyer is also a big climate change advocate, which I stay out of that debate since I don’t believe anyone really knows for sure whether the fluctuations in weather are more manmade or natural cycles.  That climatological scientists overwhelmingly warn us of climate change, is it possible their findings come more from peer pressure & career advancement?  If it is someday proven manmade, here’s hoping advanced technologies moving forward can help bail us out.

I just consider the nuclear threat 1000x more dangerous & immediate than climate change.  Nuclear proliferation could start spreading out of control to where mankind’s destruction becomes a virtually certainty.  As a never-Trumper, the only way I could ever change my mind about him is if he finds some way to arrest the North Korean &/or Iranian nuclear programs.  Whatever steps he takes would be incredibly dangerous & put millions immediately at risk, yet we need to ask, can we afford not to do something?  Another interesting question assuming we take action, can we really trust Trump’s judgement to do the right thing?  Let’s face it, there are no good options.  Another dire point I’ll bring up, which the more hardcore far-right fanatics attack the deep state, the more vulnerable we become on this next one.  It’s easy to get the impression we’re not staying ahead of our enemies on cyber-warfare, where the validity of our elections are now in doubt.  If so, are adversaries like China & Russia also gaining an advantage on Artificial Intelligence?  No matter how much we outspend the world on conventional weapons & manpower, the nation who wins the AI race will someday rule the world, as the power of AI will even eventually dwarf the power of nuclear weapons, assuming the world survives that long.  Somber thoughts I realize, but it’s folly to ignore reality.

As for the other news lately, I really don’t have a problem with a congressional investigation on the uranium deal.  It always seemed like a fishy deal to me, so it’d be interesting to learn the reasons behind the deal.  But with Nunes opening the congressional probe, there’s no doubt the true motive is to distract & conflate the real Russian scandal.  See more of my thoughts about this uranium deal plus the Clinton campaign funding the British spy dossier in today’s part 2 under Evil-Echo.  I can sense Trump knows he’s in trouble from multiple fronts, especially the Mueller investigation, so in partnership with the echo they’re throwing up all sorts of detours & roadblocks to fool his base, while discrediting Mueller, Comey, the media & anyone else who might be involved in lowering the boom on Trump over the scandal.  He’ll have so many of his loyal Trumpeters so confused, they’ll still believe in Trump’s innocence even should the investigators provide concrete proof of criminal activity.

The big headlines from the week came from Corker & Flake.  Those opponents on the far-right who are critical of the important statements given by these two Senators, that’s a dead-giveaway these opponents are doing a great disservice to the GOP & the United States.  In supporting the scorched-earth nihilism defining these hardcore radicals & taking over the party, they are enemies to the governing process & democracy itself, while also engaging on a maniacal mission to destroy the GOP.  Corker & Flake wish to restore civility to DC so the dysfunctional, inflammatory culture can be restrained, enabling leaders to start working together on behalf of the people.  Flake called the current state of things a sickness in the system that’s contagious & we must ultimately break the spell.

Corker mentioned how the President is utterly untruthful, while multiple times the White House staff asked him to intervene before the President did something crazy.  He also said the President is devolving & by now it’s apparent despite holding the highest office, Trump will not be able to rise to the occasion.  Most GOP members of Congress likely believe this even if it’s not currently politically expedient to say it.

As President there must be an awareness those with disagreements will punch up & that it just comes with the position, but as leader there should be a healthy restraint from punching down.  The dynamics of leadership need to set more of a unifying tone.  But his paper thin-skin & massive ego keep getting in the way.  That goes for having the better judgement not to attack United States Senators, or the widowed mother whose husband was just lost in a terrorist ambush.  As he fails to lead & unite, America is floundering & losing our status around the world.  His daily tasks seem only focused on exalting himself, which along the way he feels compelled to settle scores & cater to his adoring fans.  But as more are commenting about the clear incompetence, his presidential leadership is revealed as abysmal & threatens to bring on disaster.  He’s in way over his head & his time as President is so calamitous, he senses the need to keep lying to prop himself up.  Outside of his merry-band of Trumpeters, it’s not working.

Inside a MSN link under all the Flake-Corker articles, Chris Coons offers this stark warning not just for Republicans, but also for Dems, which I’ve got some excerpts here in these 3 paragraphs:

If the Republican Party under Donald Trump has no room for independent-minded conservatives, and if, in the coming years, senators like Jeff Flake and Bob Corker are replaced by fringe conservatives handpicked because of their blind loyalty to this president, it will be too late for responsible conservatives to salvage the party they’ve built over generations.

As a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, I’m particularly worried by the prospect of Mr. Trump’s narrow, nationalist “America First” foreign policy replacing the vision of lawmakers like Mr. McCain, Mr. Corker and Mr. Flake who have pushed for strong American global leadership based on human rights, the rule of law and strong international agreements. I sincerely hope that Republican leaders recognize this before it’s too late.

As for Democrats, there should be no sense of satisfaction in what is happening to the Republican Party. The balance of two functioning political parties has been essential to our country’s success. In fact, we should take this moment to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask: How much do our own party’s internal battles resemble the fight happening within the Republican Party? As Democrats call for independence and pragmatism from Republicans, we should be asking ourselves how tolerant we are of dissent within our own party and how much we are really willing to reach across the aisle.

In the Related Articles beneath the links on Russia, cyber-warfare & Steyer, we see reports on the Steele dossier, & then many, many, many articles on the Flake & Corker comments, all wrapped in the context of the GOP civil war & Trump’s despicable character.  There are even links to Tom Coburn admitting Trump has a personality disorder, along with other articles on Trump’s bullying, bombastic, braggadocious, boorish nature, then we conclude with his sagging poll numbers.

If you happen to spot Juliette Kayyem’s articles among the huge number below, I sure found them interesting, especially if you feel as I do Trump is not long for the office.  Congressional members might sense it too, trying to rush through tax cuts before the world crumbles around the White House.
